KATIE MALLARD
Katie Mallard is a Samba Band Director, Community Percussionist and Composer based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.
Growing up playing the electronic organ with her Dad she was disappointed to hear that there were no organ parts in the high school orchestra so proceeded to get stuck into the percussion section and never looked back. Whilst studying Psychology in Cambridge she discovered Arco Iris Samba Band and was shocked to see not only that they played without music but that they would accept anybody to join! Instantly hooked, Katie is now a full-time Community Percussionist, working with communities and schools as well as directing bands.
In 2013 Katie formed Banda Na Rua, a musical force playing all original tunes, fusing Funk, Drum n Bass and Hip Hop rhythms with inspiration from North Brazil and across the world. Her three favourite songs are written about holiday anecdotes, a local beer, and strange stuff that they buy on ebay! Take a listen on Spotify. As a psychologist first and a musician second, Katie’s main driving force has always been making an impact on people’s lives so she also set up Valley Beats Samba band to appeal to all members of the community. Through their shared passion for percussion, members leave their worries at the door and find a sense of belonging through collective music-making with new friends.
Katie is super-excited to be joining us for the Durham International Brass Festival… “I spend so much of my life directing other performers it will be a real opportunity to focus on myself and my new comrades in such a beautiful city
